This is all started because of my "little brother", my colleague, my friend, Jim Pepoon. He had begun to be involved with PIH (Partners in Health) and became an advisor for them on the pathology lab in Rwanda at the Butaro Hospital. He went over and advised and helped the hospital get a histology lab up and running. I went to a MaSH meeting where Jim gave a presentation on his trip to Africa. Listening to Jim speak of all the challenges of this endeavor and through his pictures, I became thoroughly captured. I want to do something good for mankind before I pass. Jim asked me if I would be interested in going. OMG!!! Really?? ME!!? He felt I was a HT that had alot to offer. We had worked together for over 6 years. We know each others work ethics and standards, it is an equal admiration that we have for each other.
I began a new chapter in my life in December 2012. I left my job at UMASS Medical and accepted a Grossing Histotechnologist job at Berkshire Medical Center. I am learning new aspects of the pathology field and really enjoying it. I like everything about my job, here at BMC.
So while at a holiday party, I made conversation with the Medical Director, Dr. Abbott and my supervisor, Suzanne Pfeifer about possibly going to Rwanda. They had both thought it was a great thing and would stand behind me in going. The Administrative Director, Terry Bills, would soon hear about this opportunity and thought is was also a wonderful opportunity.
It is all coming together right now. I have spoken with Dr. Neo Patela in Rwanda and found out what would be my duties when I get there. I have received papers on progression of the histology lab and the operation of Butaro Hospital.
My hope is to keep this blog and record the amazing experience that lies ahead of me, and to share it with all of you.
I know you have a lot to offer and will have the time of your life. I can't wait to read all about you adventure . You are an amazing Histo Tech with a lot to offer, stay safe, keep us posted and take lots of pictures. Belinda
